Chapter 2 ~ Development

Development

Development started after getting my sounds and arts, Initially, the proof of concept went well. The game and sounds were working smoothly until I was told that making a top-down game would be difficult for the blind to listen to the direction of the sound. As such, it was recommended for me to make it one dimension instead. Although I agreed, I thought that making the game two dimensions would be more challenging as the fish has more areas to spawn and move. I could also incorporate unique gameplay elements that fit well with it.

The Change

The game later changed into one-dimensional and became a side scroller where the player can only move horizontally and it proved to be a challenge. With the one-dimensional design, the fish no longer move in the pattern and instead spawn randomly after being caught. The camp is also removed as a result as it defeats the purpose of the player looking for it using sound in the first place. The ideas I had for the other levels would later have to be modified to complement this design.

The challenge I faced during this transition is how to make the game interesting. As the player can only move horizontally,  the gameplay is limited. Before, the player had to listen to the sound to locate the fish. Although they still do now, the player doesn't really need to think as if the fish is not on the left, then it is on the right. At the same time, because of this design, I needed to create a tutorial level while the main gameplay will be the next level. This leaves me to only come up with more one level and the game will be complete.
